Founded and operated by Shelly Bell, Mama Bear's Driving School brings a personal, steady, and practical approach to driver education.
Mama Bear has lived in the Bay Area since 1990 and knows the roads, traffic patterns, neighborhoods, and driving challenges that new drivers face every day. From busy city streets to freeway merging, parking lots, school zones, and those "why is everyone braking?" Bay Area moments, Mama Bear teaches students how to drive with confidence, awareness, and good judgment.
Mama Bear is also the proud mom of three wonderful boys, which is part of where the name comes from. She understands how important it is for families to feel comfortable, respected, and confident when choosing someone to teach their child how to drive.
Before becoming a driving instructor, Mama Bear spent many years behind the wheel as a professional truck driver. She holds a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL), which means she has trained, tested, and worked at a level far beyond ordinary passenger vehicle driving. Her background gives her a practical, safety-first approach that helps students understand not just how to operate a car, but how to read the road, anticipate problems, and make smart decisions.
After years of professional driving, Mama Bear decided to bring that experience into driver education. Her goal is simple: help students become safe, calm, responsible drivers.
Because this is a one-person driving school, students are not passed from instructor to instructor. When you schedule lessons with Mama Bear's Driving School, you work directly with Mama Bear. That means consistent instruction, clear expectations, and a more personal learning experience.
Mama Bear understands that every student learns differently. Some students are excited to drive. Some are nervous. Some need help with the basics, while others are preparing for a road test and need focused practice. Her teaching style is patient, steady, and honest. She believes students learn best when they feel supported, respected, and not rushed.
